Gregg Matte was born and raised in Houston and trusted Christ as his Savior at the age of 16. Since then, God has worked powerfully in and through his life.
In 1989, while a sophomore at Texas A&M University, Gregg and his roommates started a small Bible study in their apartment that they called Breakaway. Under his leadership, Breakaway grew rapidly, reaching thousands of students each week. In 2004, God called Gregg to serve as senior pastor of Houston's First Baptist Church. Since then, the church has experienced tremendous growth, launching four additional campuses, and continues to make a significant impact around the world.
He has authored numerous books, including Difference Makers: How to Live a Life of Impact and Purpose, Finding God’s Will, I AM Changes Who I Am, Unstoppable Gospel, and his latest Christmas devotional, Salvation Has Come. He has also written Bible studies like The Highest Education: Becoming a Godly Man and Birds and Bees: A Conversation about God, Sex, and Sexuality.
Gregg holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Texas A&M University and a master’s degree in Christian Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He serves on the boards of Houston Christian High School and Breakaway Ministries. He previously served as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Houston Christian University. In 2011, he received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the Mays Business School at Texas A&M, the first ever given to a pastor. Most importantly, Gregg is married to Kelly and is the proud father of two children, Greyson and Valerie.
